The SHAC "Skills In Hills'" MTB Development program, developed to introduce riders to the trails in the Surrey Hills and install core skills that will help you stay safe yet enjoy the fantastic trails we have in the Surrey Hills to there maximum potential. We have 3 dates scheduled for early 2019:
- Wednesday 6th February 1000 -1300
- Wednesday 6th March 1000 - 1300
- Wednesday 10th April 1000 - 1300
If you are new to mountain biking or have been riding for a while and would like some coaching to increase your confidence and improve your technique then this is the course for you.
The SHACs Mountain Bike courses have been designed to build confidence by re building your riding position and instilling the fundamental skills required to ride a mountain bike which are generally not taught to us when we learn to ride a bike. Once the changes have been made it will allow you to ride with more flow and confidence than you ever thought possible.
The program uses an 8 point riding development structure that was developed over a number of years and includes the following elements.
- Head and body position
- Feet positioning and lower body movement
- Energy management
- Speed control and gear selection
- Climbing / Descending
- Transferring skills to single track trail riding
- Section identification and observations (Entry/Section/Exit)
- Bike and Equipment Safety Check
Scott "Skip" Innes is the Founder and main leader of the Surry Hills Adventure Company (SHAC). SHAC is a family run business based in the heart of the Surrey Hills. Skip is an experienced multi discipline adventure leader with a number of qualifications including forest school practitioner, mountain bike skills instructor and RYCA. In addition to Scott, the SHAC teams has a full roster of guides including Julie Willard-Innes, Kirsty Porter, Matthew Quorroll and Josh Battenberg Their motto is: “Think Outside, No Box Required.”

Did a MTBing 1 to 1 with Skip this week, and I have come away bouncing! He's super patient, explains everything so clearly and despite me being such a big wuss, I felt really safe. I was even happy to attempt "scary stuff" as Skip developed all my skills to make it happen. The session has really boosted my confidence, I came away so inspired and can't recommend a session enough! You'll be flying!
Brilliant MTB course - thanks so much Skip, we learnt a lot! The tuition was brilliant - tailored to us and Skip is very knowledgeable and patient. The surroundings were beautiful too and we had great fun trying out our new skills on the 'yoghurt pots' trail afterwards - we will definitely be back! Great advice to go to the Hatch too - fabulous food.
