When to go
April to September
This adventure takes place near Longparish (Hampshire), a picturesque village on the bank of the River Test. This is the perfect activity for those seeking to develop their fly-fishing skills with wild trout or grayling, whilst enjoying the beautiful natural surroundings of Hampshire. All kit is provided so all you need is a desire to learn!
On the day you can expect your guide to meet you at 9.30am at your fishing beat location, one of the most idyllic locations on the Upper River Test. You will setup for the day and then it's straight into fishing.
You'll receive one-to-one tuition on casting techniques, tackle, leader set ups, fly selection and entomology of the local area. With a large number of wild trout and grayling on this beat, two fish may be taken home, then it'll be catch and release on barbless hooks. There is nothing quite like a flowing river surrounded by trees for giving you peaceful bliss.
There is a fully equiped rod room for making tea etc and lunch can be a picnic (ask the guide about catering) or a cosy pub just 5 minutes by car from the beat. A typical day ends at 5.30pm, by which time you'll be a proficient expert!
All in all this is a fantastic option because it’s very easy to travel. It also requires minimal kit as all technical kit is provided, so you just have to turn up with a sense of adventure.
We recommend you book now as demand is high. Then the guide will be in contact to agree the date. Adventure sorted!
Based in Hampshire on the world famous chalkstreams, Gilly Bate has been fishing for over 25 years with 16 years of teaching, guiding and fishing world wide for trout and all manner of species. Her qualifications are with single handed rods from beginners to advanced and she is a member of GAIA, AAPGAI and level 2 coaching. Gilly has also demonstrated at Country Fairs, written for the Field Magazine, won casting competitions and given presentations at various Clubs including the renowned Fly Fishers Club in Mayfair.
Optional extras include booking additional days of instruction (ask the guide).
Catering option available upon request (ask the guide).
The beat is a wading beat so the guide has waders you can borrow. There is also bank fishing on both sides of the beat, so bring wellington boots or trainers as it can get muddy.
Some previous casting experience is useful as this is a challenging place to learn as a complete beginner.
Please note that in England you have to purchase an Environment Agency fishing licence for trout fishing. This is very easy and cheap (about £4.00) and can be bought here or at a local post office.
Please note you have to be 18 years or over to book this adventure (unless accompanied by a parent or guardian).
Wilderness Now does not provide this activity. It acts as agent facilitating your entry into a contract in respect of this activity, which is provided by Gilly Bate.

I have been booking chalk stream fishing through Gilly and using her guiding services for about 7 years now and everything she does is first-class!! She has a wide variety of beats across all the chalk streams that can be booked for you and she is very open, giving excellent advice in order to make sure your day is tailored to exactly what you are after in terms of type of water, fish, scenery and skill level.
Having Gilly as your guide is an absolute pleasure! She makes the day really fun and relaxed. You can learn so much from her given the depth of knowledge she brings be it fishing skills, casting techniques, fly life etc. She is a excellent fly caster and a brilliant teacher even someone who has been fishing and casting for years will benefit from a casting lesson with her. I can’t recommend Gilly enough if you are after chalk stream fishing, guiding services or if you want to learn or improve your casting, I would not use anyone else!
We have been lucky enough over the years to have Gilly teach and guide for us. As a teacher she has seemingly limitless knowledge of casts flies and tactics. This combined with endless good humour, enthusiasm and patience has seen us make great strides forward and Gilly’s patience has been particularly helpful when she has been guiding us as we still have the gift of ‘landing’ vegetation. The fact that Gilly is great company is icing on the cake!
