When to go
April to September
This adventure takes place near Keswick (Cumbria), a pretty market town at the heart of Lake District National Park. If you’re looking for an exhilarating mountaineering experience, then this scramble up Carn Crag is a must.
On the day you can expect your guide to meet you at 9.00am at your accommodation or at the Chalet Tearooms in Portinscale. You will then set off to a hidden valley, which feels a million miles from everything.
A gentle walk in will stretch your legs, getting you ready for your epic scramble. The famous ridge can be climbed in almost any conditions and all the steepest sections can be avoided by moving left at any time onto grassy ledges. The guide will hone your steep ground skills making this is an excellent stepping stone for future adventures.
All in all this is a fantastic option because it’s very easy to organize and requires minimal kit or fitness. The skills learnt will help you plan further adventures in this incredible National Park.
We recommend you first contact the guide to agree a date, then book your accommodation. Adventure sorted!

You can take the train to Penrith. From London it's 3 hours, direct from Euston. You can then take a local taxi or bus to Keswick. Total travel time is around 4 hours 30 mins.
Having done a small amount of lead climbing with friends we wanted someone to take us out on the crags and give us a bit more confidence with trusting our abilities on gear setting and setting up belays. Mandy was very helpful and friendly and we felt we got a lot from the weekend.
Having started indoor climbing 8 months ago, I wanted someone to introduce me to outdoor climbing. Mandy was recommended to me. I spent two incredible days climbing with her on Shepherds Crag and Black Crag in Borrowdale in the Lake District. Her instruction and guidance in all aspects of what we were doing; belaying, how to use and place the gears, ropes, different types of knots and all the safety aspects of climbing, were excellent!! An experience I will not forget!
