When to go
April to September
This adventure takes place near Woodcroft (Gloucestershire), a pretty town overlooking the river Wye. If you’re looking for a truly unique British adventure, then sleeping on a portaledge is unforgettable. You will learn and experience a method of camping usually reserved for extreme mountaineers.
On the first day you can expect your guide to meet you at 10.00am in Woodcroft, a small village near Chepstow. You will learn about the kit to be used and discuss safety, so everyone feels ready for the upcoming challenge.
To ease you into it, the guide will give you some abseiling fun on the stunning cliffs of the Wye Valley. As late afternoon arrives, you will set up the portaledge on the side of the cliff and begin your night of vertical living! Comfy and settled, you'll cook you up a delicious little dinner, with a sunset over the river below.
On the second day you will get up at a leisurely pace and enjoy a breakfast on the portaledge. When all are ready (extreme selfies taken!), you'll ascend back up the ropes to return to flat land. You'll be back in Woodcroft by midday, feeling somewhat exhilarated.
All in all this is a fantastic option because it’s one of those unforgettable extreme experiences, but actually surprisingly comfortable and very easy to organize.
We recommend you first contact the guide to agree a date, then find someone mad enough to join you. Adventure sorted!

Wasn’t sure what to expect, as my boyfriend booked the experience for my birthday. As soon as we arrived, Kevin gave me the confidence, and reassured me. It was an unforgettable experience. And felt looked after throughout the two days. Thank you again Kevin!
We had a great time, was scared at first, and wasn’t sure what to expect. Kevin was very reassuring and made the experience go flawlessly, and felt safe throughout the stay on the portaledge.
Awesome experience hanging out on a cliff tent. Definitely one memorable experience!
